The Department of Art as Applied to Medicine is a leader in the field of visual communication for science and health care. Built on a strong foundation of scientific knowledge, artistic technique, and clear visual communication, the Department of Art as Applied to Medicine has maintained the highest standards while embracing new medical, scientific, and communication technologies.

The Department is dedicated to providing the educational competencies and motivation necessary for graduates to attain the highest standards as professional clinical anaplastologists through the two-year Clinical Anaplastology (CA) Master of Science program, as well as professional medical illustrators and through two-year, accredited, Medical and Biological Illustration (MBI) Master of Arts program. Concurrent with these educational goals, the Visualization Services faculty and staff of the department strive to provide the Johns Hopkins Institutions with preeminent biomedical communications services, producing illustrations, animations, and graphic design. Certified Clinical Anaplastologists of the Facial, Eye & Body Prosthetics Clinic within the Department create non-weight bearing custom-designed rehabilitative prostheses used in the treatment of disfigurements caused by trauma, cancer, or developmental differences.
