The Master of Arts in Divinity (MA) is a two-year program providing a foundation in the academic study of religion and its adjacent fields.
Students have the opportunity to study the cultures, languages, thought, practices, and institutions of religious traditions, both ancient and modern. We prepare our students for doctoral study in religion or related fields but also encourage the program as a means to pursue other professions or areas of interest for which the study of religion is an important component.
All students in the MA program take a minimum of 15 courses. MA students work with their assigned faculty advisor to develop a course of study that best fits their personal, professional, and academic goals. Students may focus on a particular area of study or may choose to study across various disciplines. MA students may also take courses in other departments outside of the Divinity School. MA students are required also demonstrate academic reading competence in a modern research language as part of the program. MA students are not required to complete a thesis but may develop independent reading and research courses with faculty members.
