EPFL is a leading center for mathematical education and research. It includes three institutes and a research center devoted to the major areas of pure and applied mathematics.

The research program in mathematical sciences has a strong international reputation. Collaborations between research groups and other universities offer interesting interdisciplinary challenges.

Program’s objectives

This program concentrates on learning advanced mathematical methods and applications of mathematics. The core subjects are analysis, applied probability and stochastic processes, statistics and data analysis, optimization and operations research, numerical analysis and scientific computing, and financial mathematics. The students learn how to approach diverse modeling problems and gain hands-on experience in an industrial setting during an internship.

Graduates are prepared for an attractive, diverse and growing job market in fields such as banks, engineering companies, automobile industry, governmental offices, pharmaceutics, consulting companies and nutrition industry. The Master of Science in Applied Mathematics is also an excellent foundation for students planning to follow a PhD program.
