Welcome to the Aiiso Yufeng Li Family Department of Chemical and Nano Engineering and congratulations on being admitted into UC San Diego!
If you are a current student interested in applying to the NanoEngineering (NENG-BS-001) and Chemical Engineering (CENG-BS-001) majors, please read below.
NanoEngineering
Effective Winter 2026, NanoEngineering is a screened major. Students interested in changing majors will need to meet all eligibility requirements in order to apply to NanoEngineering.
NENG-BS-001 Screened Major Eligibility Requirements
- Overall UC San Diego GPA of 2.0 or above
- Letter grade of C- or above in all screening courses
- Required screening courses:
- First-year admits: MATH-020A-C, MATH-018; CHEM-006A-C, PHYS-002A, NANO-004*
- Transfer students: MATH-020A-D, MATH-018; CHEM-006A-C; PHYS-002A-C; NANO-004* or NANO-011 or NANO-015
- No outstanding grades for screening courses (e.g., Incompletes, pending Academic Integrity case, pending transfer credit, etc.)
- Students who entered UC San Diego as First-Years must apply prior to the start of their 7th quarter at UC San Diego (Summer quarters not counted). Students who entered UC San Diego as Transfers must apply prior to the start of their 4th academic quarter (Summer quarters not counted).
Students can apply to switch into NanoEngineering by using the Major/Minor Tool on TritonLink. Students with 150+ units will need to submit a quarter-by-quarter plan. Please allow a 1-2 week turnaround time for applications to be reviewed.
UC San Diego students that have questions about applying to the NANO major are encouraged to reach out to the CNE Undergraduate Advising office early in their planning to ensure they are on track to be as successful as possible once in the program. Please contact the department via the Virtual Advising Center (VAC).
