专业介绍

Students in the Geosciences major develop a broad understanding of the Earth through a rich and dynamic curriculum that emphasizes the interdisciplinary nature of the subject.  Courses are designed to maximize student learning using a scaffolded lower-division sequence followed by required upper division courses and a diverse array of upper division electives organized into areas of concentration.  Students receiving a Bachelor of Science degree in Geosciences are thus able to choose electives tailored to their interests or career aspirations, and are well-prepared for a multitude of options post-graduation.

The geosciences major takes advantage of the unique opportunities offered by Scripps Institution of Oceanography. Classes at all levels are generally small, permitting personalized instruction and a relatively close cohort of students. Field trips and experiential learning are an important part of the Geosciences major curriculum.  Students may participate in research in various labs as volunteers or for course credit.

A Bachelor’s degree in Geosciences prepares students for a broad range of career and graduate school opportunities in many areas including research, jobs with local, state, and federal agencies; mineral and energy exploration, environmental careers in consulting, remediation, and natural resource management; renewable energy; education, including elementary, secondary, and post-secondary; careers in environmental policy and law; geotechnical engineering; and hazard mitigation.  The demand for geoscientists in modern society is high.  SIO Academic Advisers and Faculty are well-suited to provide assistance for students in finding their optimal career-development track within the curriculum.
