The African Studies undergraduate program is an excellent way to develop geographically focused international expertise and to learn about the fascinating diversity of Africa’s 55 nations. The program provides essential background and foundational skills for graduate work in anthropology, art history, history, literature, and other disciplines.
Combined with academics in comparative literature, art history, economics, sociology, anthropology, environmental studies, and medicine, African Studies prepares students for possible positions with national or international organizations involved in Africa. Some students go on to rewarding and successful careers in fields ranging from peace building to disease eradication.
DECLARATION OF MAJOR / MINOR
Students should declare their intended major by the second semester of their second year. Typically this occurs before the Declaration of Major deadline (usually the third week in February.) Students are eligible to change their major after this date but their initial declaration is required by this time.
Students are eligible to declare up to two concentrations in Emory College of Arts and Sciences although only one major is required. This means a student may declare one major, two majors, or a major and a minor.
To declare (or remove) a major or minor, complete the Declaration of Major Form in OPUS (under the Course Planning and Enrollment tile).
If you would like more information before declaring a major or minor, contact the IAS Program Coordinator, Jacquelyn Charlton at jacquelyn.charlton@emory.edu to schedule a brief meeting.
