The future of ocean food production
The Master of Science (MSc) in Sustainable Fisheries and Aquaculture focuses on the technologies behind modern fisheries and aquaculture systems. You will develop the competences to create engineering solutions that improve production, reduce environmental impact, and ensure efficient use of resources.
The programme brings together engineering and life science, giving you a solid knowledge of technology and biology. You can work with aquaculture production systems, water treatment technology, water quality, feed resources, production biology and welfare, low-trophic aquaculture, and the genetics of fish stocks. You can also choose to work with conservation efforts, fisheries ecology, anthropogenic change, fishing technology, digital monitoring, ecosystem management, and the application of data-driven methods.
During your studies, you can develop the competences to improve existing solutions or develop innovative new ones for land-based aquaculture and fishing gear, while gaining knowledge of emerging areas such as low-trophic aquaculture, the circular economy, and machine learning.
Through coursework, group work, and projects, you will strengthen your analytical and technical skills while learning to collaborate across disciplines. The programme prepares you for an exciting career in developing responsible and efficient fisheries and aquaculture systems.
Specializations
The Sustainable Fisheries and Aquaculture programme offers a high degree of flexibility, allowing you to choose a specialization or tailor your study profile through elective courses. Choosing a specialization allows you to focus on specific areas of interest while building a strong foundation in engineering approaches to fisheries and aquaculture.
Fisheries, Biodiversity and Resource management
This specialization focuses on sustainable fishing technologies and management and conservation strategies in aquatic ecosystems. You will work with the productivity and genetics of fish stocks, fishing gear design, recreational fishing, digital monitoring, and data-driven approaches to ensure efficient and responsible use of marine resources.
Aquaculture
This specialization focuses on advanced aquaculture systems, with an emphasis on land-based fish farming, water treatment technologies, and resource-efficient production. You will also work with low-trophic aquaculture of algae and shellfish, animal welfare in aquaculture, nutritional physiology, and resource utilization.
