Physics is the study of the fundamental laws that govern the universe, from the smallest quantum particles to the vast structures of galaxies. Everything around us, from the devices we rely on to the natural phenomena we witness, reflects these universal principles. Physicists are driven by curiosity, by the desire to understand why things are the way they are, and how that knowledge can be used to improve the human condition. We look out at the universe and ask: What are the fundamental building blocks of nature? What drives the unseen forces around us? How can we use what we learn to shape a better future?
As a physics major, you’ll retrace humanity’s journey of discovery, from the earliest attempts to describe motion and change to today’s explorations of nature’s deepest mysteries in areas such as particle physics, cosmology, and condensed matter. You’ll learn how electricity and magnetism power our modern world and transmit information at the speed of light. You’ll dive into the strange behavior of the quantum realm and explore how it’s transforming technology, from quantum computing to precision sensors. You’ll also uncover the history of the universe from the Big Bang onward, developing a new understanding of space and time through the study of relativity.
