What you can expect in our master’s program
The master’s degree program in Mechatronics and Information Technology provides you with in-depth interdisciplinary knowledge from the disciplines of mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, information technology and computer science. It qualifies you for challenging tasks in industry and research. You have a great deal of freedom in designing your studies. The modules can be taken in any order and selected purely on the basis of content.
The degree program consists of the following components:
- Field of Specialization in Mechatronics and Information Technology (60 CLP): each Field of Specialization is composed as follows
- Mandatory Electives – Methodical (8 CP)
- Mandatory Electives – General (16 CP)
- Lab Course: as part of your specialization, you will complete a laboratory course at KIT. You can choose which one you would like to do.
- Additive Electives
- Vehicle Systems Engineering
- Energy Technology
- Micro System Technology
- Industrial Informatics and Systems Engineering
- Autonomous Systems and AI
- Automation, Control, and Robotics
- Design of Mechatronic Systems
- Elective Area in Mechatronics and Information Technology (22 CP): here you can take elective modules. You may include a maximum of one additional lab course in this subject. The modules available can be found in the module handbook.
- Interdisciplinary Qualifications (8 CP): this subject rounds off your qualification profile according to your individual wishes. Whether it’s language courses, presentation techniques, or a course on work-life balance, KIT has a lot to offer – the choice is yours.
Master’s thesis
You complete your degree program with a master’s thesis worth 30 CP. This is an academic paper in a subject area of your choice that enables you to apply and deepen the knowledge and skills you have acquired. It requires independent research, analysis and the composition of a written paper. Finally, you present the results of your work. You can also complete the master’s thesis at an earlier stage, but you must have already earned at least 75 CP. The processing time is six months. Upon request, the master’s thesis can also be completed in a company or at another KIT Department.
Internship
The study program does not include a compulsory internship. You can complete a voluntary internship during your studies. If it serves the objectives of your studies and covers at least half of the lecture period, you can apply for a semester off (leave of absence). Such an internship offers you valuable experience outside the university and can make it easier for you to start your career later on.
Make your studies international
You have various options for integrating a stay abroad into your master’s degree program. For example, you can study at a foreign university of your choice for one or two semesters via Erasmus+ or as a freemover. You can also do an internship abroad. In addition, selective mobility is possible via Eucor – The European Campus: KIT students can flexibly attend individual courses in addition to courses at KIT or study full-time for an entire semester or year at an Eucor partner university.
