Nurturing Mathematics Teachers with a Professional Attitude
The B.Ed. (Mathematics and Mathematics Education) is an interdisciplinary programme co-organized by the Faculty of Education and the Department of Mathematics of CUHK. It is a double major undergraduate programme, in which students learn solid mathematical knowledge and receive integrated teacher training in both theory and practice. Teachers in the programme are well known scholars in mathematics, mathematics education or educational studies. By means of lectures, experiential learning, and teaching practice in secondary schools, the students acquire both mathematics and teacher professional knowledge, develop transferable skills in research and practice, and are equipped to assume leadership roles in mathematics teaching. Graduates are awarded a Bachelor of Education degree with a double major in Mathematics and Mathematics Education, including a qualification equivalent to a Postgraduate Diploma in Education, and are qualified to teach in secondary schools.
Students enrolled in the BMED programme learn both mathematics and educational theories. The programme design is stimulating and rewarding; its interdisciplinary nature equips our students with both subject matter and pedagogical knowledge and skills, thereby advancing their interests and passion in the fields of mathematics and education. The BMED programme also offers courses for students to enhance their subject-specific skills, such as the teaching and learning of geometry, statistics and calculus; tasks designs in STEM education; and contemporary issues in mathematics education. These courses enable them to reflect on what it means to teach and learn mathematics in the 21st century. The students’ development in all areas of mathematics and mathematics education is significant and rigorous, enabling them to see and teach mathematics from an advanced perspective.
