The master’s degree in mathematics encompasses the basic graduate curriculum in mathematics, and also offers the opportunity of some more specialized training in an area of interest. A typical master’s programme will involve the following fields: algebra, analysis, geometry, foundations, numerical analysis, computer science, and various other fields of applied mathematics.
There are two streams in the Programme:
·Mathematics Stream
·Big Data Analytics and Computations Stream
Students can declare stream in their final term of study. The declaration is usually conducted in February every year.
Learning Outcomes
On completion of this degree, graduates should have acquired good mathematical knowledge and skill beyond undergraduate level.
I. Mathematics Stream
A. Knowledge
Graduates should have acquired:
- advanced concepts in mathematics of higher level;
- mathematical theory and applications in rigorous fashion; and
- Further knowledge in recently developed topics of mathematics.
B. Skills
Graduates should have acquired:
- the ability to understand and comprehend mathematical literature of higher level independently;
- the ability to apply mathematical knowledge in a professional field (in teaching or in other fields); and
- the ability to formulate and communicate logically on problems involving mathematics;
C. Values and attributes
Graduates are expected to be able to:
- appreciate and advocate the beauty/power of higher mathematics in human culture and the modern society.
- take advantage of quantitative and analytic exactitude; and
- promote mathematics in scientific development as well as in the general education of the society.
II. Big Data Analytics and Computations Stream
A. Knowledge
Graduates will have advanced knowledge in computational methods and data analytics;
B. Skills
Graduates can apply efficient methods to analyze the data in many different areas, for example, business, industry and scientific research.
C. Values and attributes
Graduates are expected to be able to:
- appreciate and advocate the beauty/power of higher mathematics in human culture and the modern society.
- take advantage of quantitative and analytic exactitude; and
- promote mathematics in scientific development as well as in the general education of the society.
All the MMAT courses are aligned with the Programme Learning Outcomes (PLOs) as stated above, which have implicit reference to the University-wide graduate attributes with reference to the Generic Level Descriptors of the Hong Kong Qualifications Framework (HKQF) Levels 5-7.
