The Department of Sociology offers the master of arts and doctor of philosophy degrees in sociology. Students receive training that equips them for careers in both teaching and research. All sociology students take basic coursework in sociological theory, research methods and statistics, and substantive areas. The program emphasizes balanced training and the integration of theory, method, and substantive knowledge. The department’s main concentrations of faculty research interest and graduate training are in demography and population, migration, health, stratification and social inequality, political sociology, research methods and social statistics, and labor force and complex organizations.

Graduate students making adequate progress receive financial assistance during the first five years of the program. Sources of aid include teaching assistantships, research assistantships, and nonservice fellowships.

Department faculty work closely with the Carolina Population Center, the Odum Institute for Research in Social Science, and other research centers and institutes on campus. The department also sponsors and edits Social Forces, one of the leading sociology journals in the world.
