What you can expect in our master’s program
The master’s program in Electrical Engineering and Information Technology at KIT offers you the opportunity to tailor your studies to your individual needs – with a clear focus on research-based teaching and hands-on work. The standard duration of study is 4 semesters, and you will earn 120 ECTS credit points (CP). The master’s program is characterized by a wide range of elective options. You will take the following courses, within which you have the freedom to choose:
- Field of Specialization (60 CP): each Field of Specialization is composed as follows
- Fundamentals (24 or 30 CP): the scope depends on the Field of Specialization you choose. Here, you will learn the fundamentals of your chosen specialization.
- Focus Area (min. 24 CP): here, you will take advanced modules.
- Lab Course: as part of your specialization, you will complete a lab course of your choice at KIT
- Electrical Power Systems and Electromobility
- Information and Communication Technology
- Automation, Robotics, and Systems Engineering
- Microelectronics, Photonics, and Quantum Technologies
- Electives (24 CP): here, you will select your elelctive modules. You may include a maximum of one additional lab course. You can find the available modules in the module handbook.
- Interdisciplinary Qualifications (6 CP): this course will round out your skill set according to your individual preferences. Whether it’s language course, presentation skills or a course on work-life balance – KIT has a lot to offer; the choice is yours.

Master’s thesis
You complete your degree program with a master’s thesis worth 30 CP. This is an academic paper in a subject area of your choice that enables you to apply and deepen the knowledge and skills you have acquired. It requires independent research, analysis and the preparation of a written paper. Finally, you present the results of your work. You can also complete your master’s thesis at an earlier stage, but you must have already earned at least 75 CP. The processing time is six months. It is usually written at one of the institutes of the KIT Department of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology. Upon request, it can also be written in cooperation with a company or at another KIT Department.
Internship
The study program does not include a compulsory internship. You can complete a voluntary internship during your studies. If it serves the objectives of your studies and covers at least half of the lecture period, you can apply for a semester off (leave of absence). Such an internship offers you valuable experience outside the university and can make it easier for you to start your career later on.
Make your studies international
You have various options for integrating a stay abroad into your master’s degree program. For example, you can study at a foreign university of your choice for one or two semesters via Erasmus+ or as a freemover. You can also do an internship abroad. In addition, selective mobility is possible via Eucor – The European Campus: KIT students can flexibly attend individual courses in addition to courses at KIT or study full-time for an entire semester or year at an Eucor partner university.
