What you can expect in our master’s program
The English-language master’s degree program in Computer Science is characterized by the fact that there are no compulsory courses and that there is a high degree of freedom of choice throughout the course. The modules of the master’s degree program are core modules, in-depth modules, minor studies modules and interdisciplinary modules. All core modules and in-depth modules can be assigned to either a specialization subject or an elective subject. The in-depth modules include all English-language advanced courses offered by the Department of Informatics as well as some German-language courses. This also includes seminars and lab courses.
Two specialization subjects are chosen. Specialization subjects can be

- Software Engineering and Compiler Construction
- Design of Embedded Systems and Computer Architectures
- Telematics
- Human-centered Machine Intelligence
- Robotics and Automation
Your specialization subjects must comprise at least 15 CP.
Core modules teach advanced fundamentals from very specific areas of computer science. Four core modules must be taken during your studies. You can choose from the following core modules:
- Algorithms II
- Computer Graphics
- Formal Systems
- Advanced Artificial Intelligence
- Human Computer Interaction
- Computer Structures
- Robotics I – Introduction to Robotics
- IT Security
- Software Engineering II
- Telematics
You can integrate the core modules into your specialization subjects or take them as electives. The Elective Studies in Informatics has a maximum of 49 CP, depending on the size of your specialization. You can take any modules from Computer Science there.
The Minor Studies has 9-18 CP and prepares you in the best possible way for a professional application by acquiring knowledge from a subject area outside of computer science. Possible subjects are
- Mathematics
- Electrical Engineering and Information Technology
- Economics
- Business Economics
- Biologically Inspired Robotics
Note: you must earn at least 3 CP through seminars and at least 6 CP through lab courses. This means you can only earn a maximum of 18 CP. You can assign seminars and lab courses to both the specialization subjects and the elective subject.
Master’s thesis
At the end of your studies, you will complete your master’s thesis (30 CP), an academic paper that enables you to apply and deepen the knowledge and skills you have acquired. It deals with a specific topic from your field of study and requires independent research, analysis and the preparation of a written thesis. The master’s thesis takes 6 months to complete. You can start it as soon as you have achieved 60 CP. Upon request, the master’s thesis can also be completed in a company or at another KIT Department. The master’s thesis also includes a presentation of your results.
Internship
The study program does not include a compulsory internship. You can complete a voluntary internship during your studies. If it serves the objectives of your studies and covers at least half of the lecture period, you can apply for a semester off (leave of absence). Such an internship offers you valuable experience outside the university and can make it easier for you to start your career later on.
Make your studies international
You have various options for integrating a stay abroad into your master’s degree program. For example, you can study at a foreign university of your choice for one or two semesters via Erasmus+ or as a freemover. You can also do an internship abroad. In addition, selective mobility is possible via Eucor – The European Campus: KIT students can flexibly attend individual courses in addition to courses at KIT or study full-time for an entire semester or year at an Eucor partner university.
