What you can expect in our master’s program

The Biomedical Engineering master’s degree program at KIT offers you the opportunity to design your studies flexibly and individually – with a clear focus on research-oriented teaching and practice-oriented work. The standard period of study is 4 semesters and you will earn 120 ECTS credits.

Biomedical Engineering is currently a rapidly expanding industry. The digitalization and personalization of medicine require highly qualified specialists. The master’s degree program in Biomedical Engineering at KIT meets this demand. It combines a wide range of interdisciplinary courses in engineering, computer science and natural sciences. Graduates of various degree programs can thus build on their knowledge. Since both the bachelor’s degree program and the master’s degree program in Biomedical Engineering have the common profile “Informationalization and Digitalization in Biomedical Engineering“, a sufficient foundation in mathematics and information technology is required for entry to the master’s degree program.

Program structure

You can largely determine the structure of the study plan yourself. The basic structure consists of the following subjects (each in credit points):

  • Profiling Modules (42 CP): first, you decide in which subject area you want to acquire your profiling. There are five available:
    • Biomedical Imaging and Signal Processing
    • Biomedical Robotics
    • Bioelectronics – Materials and Interfaces
    • Medical Product Development
    • Modeling and Simulations for Medicine
    Each profile is made up of three areas:
    • Engineering Modules (at least 18 CP)
    • Medical Technology and Clinical Modules (at least 14 CP)
    • Laboratory/Practical Course

  • Elective Modules (42 CP): here you can take elective modules. You can find the available modules in the module handbook. You may take a maximum of one additional laboratory/practical course in this subject.
  • Interdisciplinary Qualifications (6 CP): here you can advance your personal development by selecting modules of your choice from the wide range of courses offered by our House of Competence, the Language Center or the FORUM. Whether it’s a language course, presentation techniques or a better work-life balance, you decide what is important to you.
  • Master’s thesis (30 CP)

Master’s thesis

The master’s thesis is usually written at the end of the degree program. You can write it earlier, but you must have already earned at least 75 CP. It takes 6 months to complete. You choose a topic in which you would like to deepen your scientific knowledge. The institutes of the KIT Department have numerous offers for this. However, you can also contribute your own topic ideas. The master’s thesis is a more extensive paper in which you carry out and present your own research tasks. Upon request, you can also write your master’s thesis at another department or university.

Internship

The study program does not include a compulsory internship. You can complete a voluntary internship during your studies. If it serves the objectives of your studies and covers at least half of the lecture period, you can apply for a semester off (leave of absence). Such an internship offers you valuable experience outside the university and can make it easier for you to start your career later on.

Make your studies international

You have various options for integrating a stay abroad into your master’s degree program. For example, you can study at a foreign university of your choice for one or two semesters via Erasmus+ or as a freemover. You can also do an internship abroad. In addition, selective mobility is possible via Eucor – The European Campus: KIT students can flexibly attend individual courses in addition to courses at KIT or study full-time for an entire semester or year at an Eucor partner university.
