The Department of African & African American Studies offers undergraduate degrees that equip students with bodies of knowledge that emerge from studying the culture, history and social reality of African and African-American peoples, and of those of African descent across the diaspora. Mastering knowledge about these diasporic peoples will also produce a broad-based interdisciplinary learning experience in the social sciences and humanities, also tied to an intellectual, social and personal maturation process
To receive the Bachelor of Arts in African & African American Studies, you are required to successfully complete 10 AAAS courses, with 8 of these at the 200-level or above. You must also choose which concentration to focus your studies—either the Americas or Africa. Other requirements are:
- AAAS 102—Introduction to African American Studies
- AAAS 103—Introduction to African Studies
- 3 Courses in your concentration each must fulfill one of the following areas:
- Arts, Literatures, and Performance
- Civilizations
- Social Sciences
- AAAS 499S—Senior Seminar
- 4 Additional AAAS Courses
