A. Background

Established in 1984, the Master of Arts in Translation Programme has the longest history among all postgraduate translation programmes in Hong Kong. This two-year part-time or one-year full-time programme aims at enhancing students’ language competence and translation skills, as well as deepening their understanding of translation theories and related cultural topics. It also focuses on developing students’ ability to articulate ideas and arguments and improve communication skills through diverse learning activities and interactions with instructors. The Programme keeps pace with the development of technology by integrating computer translation tools in teaching and learning, and encourages students to experiment with these technologies.

The curriculum offers three streams of specialization that will allow students to prioritize a sub-discipline of translation: Written Translation, Interpreting, and Computer-augmented Translation. Additionally, students who do not wish to specialize can choose not to focus on any one stream.

B. Admission Requirements

To meet the general qualifications required for admission to the Graduate School, applicants shall have graduated from a recognized university and obtained a bachelor’s degree, normally with honours not lower than Second Class or achieving an average grade of not lower than “B”; or completed a course of study in a tertiary educational institution and obtained professional or similar qualifications equivalent to a bachelor’s degree. Shortlisted applicants will be invited to attend an interview.
