Engagement in interdisciplinary humanities and comparative methodologies builds the habits of thought, writing, and action essential for understanding the complexity of contemporary global culture. A major in Comparative Literature, Arts, and Media offers an interdisciplinary, flexible program for students to explore comparisons across languages, cultures, periods, genres, and disciplines. It offers students the opportunity to increase skills in analytical reading and argumentative writing and to develop an understanding of the interrelationships among different cultural traditions, languages, media, and disciplines. The Comparative Literature, Arts, and Media Major is designed to be flexible for combination with another major. 

Undergraduate majors establish individualized programs of study in close consultation with a faculty advisor focusing on comparative work across languages, media and/or disciplines. A core of courses in the department provides them with models of comparative methodology and familiarity with some of the essential writings in literary and cultural theory, and a required senior seminar brings the group of majors together for a final course in comparative theory and practice. Students who choose to write a senior thesis will find it an opportunity for synthesis of earlier course work and further intellectual exploration.
