Environmental health lies at the core of public health. It focuses on understanding how people interact with their environments in order to protect human health, promote well‑being, and support safe, healthy communities. The undergraduate major in Environmental Health Sciences equips students with a comprehensive understanding of the environmental factors that influence human health; the physical, chemical, and biological processes through which human activities affect the environment; the methods used to assess these impacts; and the science‑based strategies used to prevent, reduce, or remediate environmental health problems. This interdisciplinary foundation prepares students to analyze complex environmental challenges and contribute to evidence‑based solutions that improve population health.
This is the only major focusing on environmental science and health at UNC anchored in the Gillings School of Global Public Health, the nation’s top public school of public health, and the only program of its kind accredited by the Council on Education for Public Health (CEPH), the nationally recognized accrediting body that ensures public health programs meet rigorous standards for academic quality, workforce preparation, and professional competencies.
The program allows students to tailor their studies through concentrations in environmental chemistry, environmental health biology, or environmental physics. Graduates pursue a wide range of opportunities, including advanced degrees in environmental health and related sciences, as well as professional programs such as medical, dental, veterinary, and law school. Those entering the workforce directly find positions in environmental advocacy organizations, consulting firms, industry, and government agencies, with some alumni even launching their own companies or nonprofits.
Students go through the program in a cohort of about 30–40 students, creating a strong sense of community within the program and the Environmental Sciences and Engineering Department. The program also offers a supportive and collaborative learning environment. Each student is matched with a faculty mentor and supported by an academic coordinator and dedicated career services coordinator within the school.
Admission into the program requires satisfactory completion of coursework in basic sciences and mathematics.
