Environmental Systems (ESYS) is an interdisciplinary program grounded in the idea that addressing today’s environmental challenges requires understanding both the natural world and the human systems that shape and respond to it. Students build a strong foundation in the natural sciences, including biology, chemistry, physics, and earth science, while also engaging with policy, economics, and society to understand how environmental problems emerge, cross disciplines, and are managed.

ESYS emphasizes systems thinking, recognizing that environmental issues are interconnected and that changes in one part of a system can influence outcomes across others. Students choose one of four major tracks (Ecology, Behavior & Evolution, Earth Science, Environmental Chemistry, and Environmental Policy), allowing them to develop depth in a particular discipline while maintaining a broad, integrative perspective.

Through coursework and a required project-based senior internship, students apply their interdisciplinary training to real-world environmental challenges. Graduates of the ESYS program are well prepared for careers or graduate study in environmental science, policy, law, industry, conservation, and sustainability, with the ability to work effectively across environmental professions.
