The study of economics helps students understand markets, firms, financial organizations and public debate about economic policy, including taxation, government expenditure, trade, globalization, health and welfare.

Economics is the study of how individuals, businesses and governments allocate resources to satisfy their objectives. The concentration in economics prepares students for graduate study in fields such as business and law, for graduate study leading to teaching and research in economics, and can be a stepping stone to employment in business, finance and non-profit and government organizations. Students may choose the standard concentration or the business economics track, each of which has an optional professional track.

Student Goals

Students in this concentration will:

  • Learn principles of decision-making by individuals, households, and firms
  • Analyze economic activity on a national and global scale, including aspects ofemployment, production of goods and services, and pricing
  • Gain familiarity with one or more economic subfields
  • Acquire advanced skills in quantitative thinking
  • Develop facility in applying statistical methods to economic data
